Vein Therapy
If spider veins are a concern for you, vein therapy can resolve them permanently and give you new legs. Intense pulsed light (IPL), laser therapy, and sclerotherapy are the common methods used to diminish the appearance of highly visible blood vessels on various areas of the body. The location and severity of the veins will determine the most suitable treatment method.
The Technology
At Ferrara Derm, vein therapy may involve the use of the Iriderm laser, the Nd: Yag laser, or IPL therapy. Laser therapy uses a single frequency of focused light to treat leg veins. The blood vessels attract the laser light, and this destroys the vein, which is soon absorbed by the body and then disappears from view. IPL devices emit a spectrum of light that heat and damage the walls of the veins, causing them to shrink and eventually fade.
Treatment Options
We will customize your treatment regimen based on our assessment of the appearance of your blood vessels.
- The Iriderm laser works well on finer red blood vessels, and is generally recommended for small dilated facial veins.
- The Candela Nd: Yag laser is suited for deeper, recurrent, more prominent vessels on the legs, and can also be used on facial veins.
- IPL is recommended for both spider veins and deep reticular veins.
We perform sclerotherapy and/or laser vein therapy for the legs. Treatment of leg veins generally targets spider and varicose veins smaller than three millimeters in diameter. Larger veins will require a referral to an appropriate specialist, which we will be happy to provide.
Achieving the maximum benefit from the therapy generally requires more than one treatment. However, there are cases that may require a combination of all 3 treatments.
The Results
Compression stockings are usually recommended immediately after vein therapy. The veins typically look redder after treatment, and it takes about 90 days for them to fade from view.
